The BRIGHTskills project is leading the charge to future-proof the European health industry by identifying and addressing the skills needed for a rapidly evolving sector. As part of this mission, we have launched one online consultation aimed at collecting input from stakeholders across the EU. BRIGHTskills partners explore this question in an article published in BIT, the magazine of Spain’s telecommunications engineering organisations COIT1 and AEIT2. The article is titled “The Telecommunications Engineer in the Health Industry: Competencies and Skills” and is available in Spanish.

Featured in issue241 as part of the magazine’s digital health special, it presents preliminary findings from the BRIGHTskills Skills Intelligence Report. It examines skills needs across four subsectors: digital health, medical technology, pharmaceuticals and biofabrication, and medical supplies.

The article highlights how telecommunications engineers can contribute through connectivity, data integration, cybersecurity and connected medical devices. It also emphasises the need to combine technical expertise with an understanding of regulations, clear communication and collaboration across disciplines. Together, these skills help engineers develop and apply solutions that meet the needs of clinical, industrial and regulatory teams.

By sharing BRIGHTskills’ findings with Spain’s telecommunications engineering community, the article highlights how education and training can help professionals respond to changing health industry needs.

The article was written by BRIGHTskills partners Vicente Traver Salcedo, Gema Ibáñez Sánchez, Helena Benito Escribá (UPV), Marta Pérez Alba (Medtronic) andMontserrat Codina (IESE Business School).
